Caption from Oceanus magazine, vol. 49, no. 2, page 20:
Built in 1931, Atlantis was WHOIs first ship. As the first vessel built specifically for deep-water oceanographic research, the 143-foot ketch rejuvenated the field, making 299 cruises until it was retired in 1964.
Image of the Day caption:
Atlantis, the first ship used at WHOI for multidisciplinary ocean research, departed for sea trials after it was built in 1931. The 142-foot, ketch-rigged Atlantis retired from service to the U.S. oceanographic community in 1963, but the name was passed to two other WHOI-operated vesselsthe now-retired Atlantis II and the current Atlantis, which began work in 1997. It was the first vessel built specifically for deep-water oceanographic research at WHOI.
