Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 51, No. 1, pg. 4 timeline:
1979: Alvin, now with a second manipulator arm and upgraded sampling equipment, returns to the Galápagos Rift to collect animals. Later, on the East Pacific Rise, scientists in Alvin discover the first black smoker hydrothermal vents, with extremely hot, chemical-rich water gushing from vent chimneys.
