The research vessel Atlantis II was officially launched on September 8, 1962, at the Maryland Shipbuilding and Drydock Co, though it was not until the next year that she made her first science expedition. Named for the WHOI's first research vessel and flagship, the ship cruised more than a million miles for science and spent more than 8,000 days at sea over the course of 34 years. After a mid-life renovation, Atlantis II served as the tender for the Alvin submersible from 1984-1996.
