Admiral Jonathan Greenert, Chief of Naval Operations, visited WHOI Nov. 6 for face-to-face discussions with scientists and engineers conducting research and building technology with potential to enhance Naval capabilities and operations. Engineers showcased underwater vehicles developed at WHOI, and Greenert received briefings from scientists about current research on climate change, the Arctic Ocean, ice sheet dynamics, and sea level rise, as well as the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, which includes a masters program for Navy officers. Here, WHOI President and Director Susan Avery presented Greenert with a specially decorated Styrofoam cup shrunken by pressure when it was carried on a mission by the Navy-owned research submersible Alvin.
