With the research vessel Knorr in the background, the first graduates of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography and Oceanographic Engineering received their diplomas in Woods Hole on June 17, 1970. Four doctorates were awared in 1970 and, to date, the institutions have jointly granted 773 degrees. This week, 31 students will receive graduate degrees from the Joint Program - 22 doctorates and 9 master's. Former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) President Charles Vest will deliver the commencement address at the ceremony in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Commencement is held in Woods Hole every five years, with the next occurring in 2010.
