Caption from 2023 WHOI Wall Calendar, Front Cover:
Piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) feed on insects and small crustaceans on beaches and are considered an indicator species for beach health. This parent and chicks were photographed by MIT-WHOI graduate student Ruijiao Sun at South Cape Beach State Park on Cape Cod. Sun is a seabird ecologist who studies Antarctic seabirds and started birding locally during the pandemic. To capture this photo, she arrived at the beach before dawn, crawled to a spot where she could watch, and waited more than an hour for the birds to become accustomed to her presence.
