It brought everyone out to marvel (except perhaps some members of the CTD team, poor things, who had worked from Sunday afternoon through the early morning hours, and needed to catch up on sleep). People came on deck in T-shirts, forgetting for a moment that they were in the Arctic. Others found sun puddles to sit or stand in, like cats, bathing in the light, even more than warmth. University of Tokyo graduate student Taichi Sato could look far on the horizon. The visibility, which had been less than a mile, extended nearly 50 kilometers (31 miles).
