Research Vessel Atlantis
Since its delivery at WHOI in 1997, Atlantis has made hundreds of port calls worldwide, from Puerto Ayora in the Galápagos Islands to New York City. Atlantis is specifically outfitted for launching and servicing the deep-sea vehicle Alvin. In recent years, the vessel spent most of its time supporting the submersible as it explores underwater volcanoes and hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean. The ship carries a complement of 36 crew members, science technicians, deep submergence group members, as well as a scientific party of 24 people.
Image of The Day caption:
Best known as the support ship for the submersible Alvin, R/V Atlantis (shown here entering New York Harbor soon after its delivery to WHOI in 1997) recently provided a much different kind of support. During the first day of a mission to explore deep brine pools in the Mediterranean south of Greece, the ship and its crew responded to a distress call and, in the proud tradition of seafarers throughout history, delivered 93 people from a sinking ship safely to shore. WHOI salutes the captain and crew of Atlantis.
