Image of The Day caption:
Brand new and not yet painted, R/V Oceanus arrived at WHOI on November 21, 1975 to cheers and celebration. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the 177-foot ship took its place in the U.S. oceanographic fleet administered by the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). Oceanus most often works in the North Atlantic--deploying moorings, studying harmful algae and ocean circulation--but ship and crew can also be found further afield supporting oceanographic research: the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, across the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Red Sea.
Caption from Down to the Sea for Science, Pg. 135:
The WHOI newsletter reported that Oceanus was greeted on its November 21, 1975 arrival in Woods Hole, "with every whistle in town, a cheering crowd, and a brave Coast Guardsman providing the traditional spray from the chilly bow of a 41-footer." Painting and other final outfitting for the 177-foot (54-meter) ship were completed later. Oceanus was funded by the National Science Foundation and constructed by Peterson Builders, Inc. of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
