To pilot an icebreaker, seamen must get their master mariners license, take a two-week course in icebreaking theory, and serve a year on an icebreaker with an experienced icebreaking deck officer-usually in the Bay of Bothnia, keeping harbors clear for ship traffic during dark Swedish winters. "But there's only so much you can tell somebody," Stromsnas said. "Then you just have to be here and do it, and you make your mistakes and get stuck for two hours, and next time, you'll choose another route."
