While Camper is below, scientists and engineers crowd into Camper's control van, intently watching video from Camper's cameras and working in coordination to operate the vehicle. WHOI engineer Phil Forte (foreground) operates the winch and cable to control Camper's altitude off the seafloor. John Bailey (center) uses two joysticks: One controls small thrusters on Camper that maneuver it; the other controls two different sampling devices, a grabber for rocks and stationary animals such as clams and a "slurp gun," which suctions in moving animals such as shrimp. WHOI biologist Tim Shank (background) manipulates Camper's camera systems, and WHOI geochemist Susan Humphris maintains the log of all operations.
