On Camper's second dive of the day, its cameras suddenly revealed cloudy, smoky-looking water. It resembled fluids in hydrothermal vent plumes. Camper's winch pilot Phil Forte recognized them immediately. As a former pilot of the WHOI-operated Alvin submersible and current pilot of the Jason remotely operated vehicle, Forte has flown through many of these underwater clouds. Unlike those vehicles, the Camper is designed for operations in ice-covered waters. It drifts with a ship and the ice pack and therefore cannot navigate freely. Forte is bundled up during Camper's recovery from its first dive of the day in a raw, miserable freezing rain.
