RV Knorr, anchored off the port of Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui (Easter Island). In the foreground is the sole moai at Ahu Ko Te Riku ceremonial site.
WOCE P6 trans-Pacific cruise. Port call between legs 1 ans 2.
In terms of the Knorr's history, this cruise was notable as the first research cruise after the mid-life lengthening.
Hanga Roa (population 3,300) is the main (only) town on the island. Moai is the local name for all the statues. They are located at various ceremonial sites called Ahu. Ahu Ko Te Riku is the specific name of the pictured ceremonial site which consists of only one moai. Most Ahu have many moai, from a handful to a dozen.
Image of The Day caption:
The research vessel Knorr shown anchored off the port of Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) during an expedition in May 1992. R/V Knorr is probably best known as the ship that supported a team of WHOI and French researchers in 1985 as they discovered the wreck of the RMS Titanic. Take a tour of the ship's pilot house and chart room online.
