New R/V Atlantis arrives in New York City for tours.
Image Of the Day caption:
In May 1997, the recently launched research vessel R/V Atlantis made its way into New York City during its first year of service. Atlantis continues to be operated by WHOI to further ocean science research. Named for WHOIs original research vessel and owned by the U.S. Navy, Atlantis is the only ship in the U.S. fleet that can support the deep-sea submersible Alvin. In recent years, Atlantis has frequently been used for expeditions to undersea volcanoes and hydrothermal vents, extreme environments reminiscent of the mysterious undersea civilization the ships name alludes to.
