Jamie Becker grew up in the woods of Pennsylvania wondering about the sea. His first taste of fieldwork came in the summer of 2003, studying heat-loving bacteria (and avoiding bears) in Yellowstone National Park. Later, he explored the coastal ecology of Zanzibar, which sold him on the importance of understanding the marine environment and its complex interactions. He began the MIT/WHOI Joint Program after working for three years as a technician at the University of Hawai'i, which included several research expeditions through the North and South Pacific, a ride in the submersible Alvin, and extensive karaoke sessions. Under his Ph.D. advisors, Dan Repeta at WHOI and Ed DeLong at MIT, Becker's research has focused on marine microorganisms, as he easily identifies with the little guys. He splits his time between taming marine microbes in the lab and taming a dog and cat at home. His mentor on this article was Richard Kerr, staff writer at Science magazine.
