WHOI Summer Student Fellow Shavonna Bent siphons a mucus sample from a live coral under the watchful eye of WHOI microbial biologist Amy Apprill. Each year, a new group of fellows arrives on campus to pursue independent research in one of the many labs on campus. Bent will soon to be a senior at Johnson State College in Vermont majoring in biology. She is working with Apprill and microbial geochemist Colleen Hansel on a study to help better understand the microbial communities that influence the health and resiliency of corals under stress.
