Caption from Down to the Sea for Science, pg. 98:
A former U. S. Navy rescue-and-salvage tug, that carried both salvage and operating crews, Chain offered ample berthing for scientists (26) and crew (39) as well as the salvage operation's workshop and storage space for conversion to scientific use. Chain emerged from re-outfitting at the Savannah Machine and Foundry Company with four large laboratories and an explosives magazine. The large afterdeck sported a winch for handling coring and trawling wire, a high-capacity hydraulic A-frame, various booms and winches, a heavy-duty capstan, and a hydraulic crane.
