Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 53, No. 1, pg. 48:
Ship crew members and mooring technicians aboard Neil Armstrong deploy a mooring during a rare calm day in the Irminger Sea. The yellow hard hats protect glass flotation spheres that hold mooring lines upright in the water.
Image Of the Day caption:
These air-filled glass spheres encased in a protective polyethylene "hard hat," are used to keep mooring lines upright, taut, and off the seafloor. This string of floats, was deployed recently as part of the Ocean Observaties Intiative (OOI) Irminger Sea Global Array to measure the physical, chemical, and biological conditions in the water and atmosphere at a critical location in Earth's ocean-climate system.
